Murphett the Crocheted Mouse: Free Crochet Pattern

Free crocheted mouse pattern

Hello there all my fellow crafters and dear supporters :)! I am here today to share my first-ever-shared crochet pattern with you!

I love creating my own patterns... when I use someone else's pattern, I usually change SOMETHING in it, as well. It's fun to put your own spin on things and make it your own! But the truth is, I am really, really bad at sharing patterns. Not because I don't know how to write them; but because I take really bad notes, and sometimes have to make a piece or two of the project again just to make sure that I am interpreting my own notes right when I get around to editing them months later... or have to redesign a piece because I only took notes for MOST of the project.

For example, this is what the notes for this pattern looked like:

"24, 11 rows, dec normal with rows in between
12
5, 10
3 12" strings, tassel and braid, embroider eyes and ears"

And this is a small project. It gets really confusing when they get larger.

BUT, I just made this little guy, and so I think it's the perfect time to share the pattern while I still remember clearly what my notes mean, don't you think?!

Murphett was inspired and named by my little brother. He's been carrying a soft Baby's First Laptop around the house to play with the little "computer mouse" attached to it. I noticed it, and thought, hmmmm, that would be really easy to copy in crochet, and I bet he would love to have one that wasn't stuck to something else! So, I impulsively put away my current project (a baby blanket) that evening, and spent a little over an hour creating this pattern!

Brother fell asleep before I finished, which was sad, because I had promised him I was making him something. But while he was being carried to bed, he woke up, and I couldn't help myself, I gave it to him right away. He grinned from ear to ear and gasped when he saw it, it was so precious! I told my sister, "That was worth it!!!" To which brother replied, "Yeah, it's Murphett!" Which is how this little mouse got his name!

Finish off.

Inner ear piece:
Begin work with cream yarn.
*Magic ring*
1: 5 sc in ring (5 st)
2: 2 sc in each st around (10 st)
Finish off.

Sew ear pieces together with light blue yarn and sew to Murphett's body. (The more pointed side created by the ending rows is Mouse's nose.)

Tail:
Cut 3 twelve-inch pieces of cream yarn, and attach to Murphett's body just as you would attach fringe to a scarf or a blanket (you can look this up on Youtube if you've never done this; it's super easy, and so useful!). Then braid his tail until you like the length (my finished tail is 3" long), and knot the end, cutting the extra yarnage close to the knot.

Take your yarn needle and thread it with black yarn to  embroider Murphett's smiling face! This part is the hardest for me, no matter the project! Give him straight stitch eyes and a curving back stitched smile, connected to his triangle nose with another straight stitch. It usually takes a couple of tries, but once you get it right, it adds a lot of character to your little stuffed toys!

Rejoicing in Hope,
